 Rain Oncology is a clinical-stage precision oncology company developing targeted therapies for complex cancers, led by its flagship small-molecule inhibitor, Milademetan. Having partnered with Rain since its founding in 2015, SayoStudio has provided multi-disciplinary visual strategy across every stage of the company’s growth—from early-stage investor pitch decks and web assets to patient education and clinical trial presentations.

As Milademetan advanced into clinical trials, Rain turned to SayoStudio to produce a cinematic 3D biotech animation illustrating its precise mode of action (MoA). Milademetan targets the p53/MDM2 protein-protein interaction—a pathway implicated in up to 50% of human cancers. In this case study, we examine how SayoStudio synthesized complex structural biology and mechanism-of-action science into an engaging, high-impact visual story designed for investors, clinicians, and patients alike.

From Science to Screen: Visualizing the Mechanism of Action

Translating complex precision oncology into an engaging, multi-stakeholder narrative requires deep scientific fluency and creative leadership. Having partnered with Rain Oncology since its inception, SayoStudio’s executive leadership—led by Nicolle Fuller and Art Director Claire Agosti—guided the visual strategy from concept to final render. Drawing on years of collaboration with Rain’s scientific team, SayoStudio established a clear visual hierarchy for the Milademetan mechanism of action (MoA) to ensure both clinical rigor and high-impact storytelling.

Writer and director Cliff Braverman collaborated closely with SayoStudio’s direction team and Rain’s molecular biologists and legal experts to craft a precise script. Every line was fine-tuned to maintain scientific accuracy while remaining accessible to investors, clinical partners, and patients.

Storyboard & Visual Architecture

As the narrative took shape, science illustrator Ari Gea hand-sketched detailed storyboards to map out key scenes, cellular environments, and camera transitions. Working under the direct creative leadership of Fuller and Agosti, along with 3D animator Christoph Kuehne, PhD, these early concepts allowed Rain’s executive team to approve the full cinematic flow—from macro cellular landscapes down to micro-level protein interactions—before entering 3D production.

3D Animation & Molecular Modeling

With the visual roadmap established, Dr. Kuehne initiated the 3D pipeline by importing atomic structures directly from the Protein Data Bank (PDB). SayoStudio’s directors worked closely with Dr. Kuehne to customize the binding geometries of the p53 and MDM2 proteins based on actual X-ray crystallography data.

To construct the surrounding biological environment, SayoStudio custom-sculpted detailed 3D cellular landscapes, organelles, and membrane beds. Under Agosti and Fuller’s art direction, the team refined the color palettes, material textures, and dynamic lighting to deliver an impactful visual identity. The final animation was paired with professional voiceover and custom sound design, providing Rain Oncology with a flagship visual asset for web, investor presentations, and medical conferences.
