In healthy soil, nitrogen cycling is maintained by robust root systems and the presence of beneficial microbes. In unhealthy soil, artificial fertilizer and increased groundwater leaching introduce excess nitrogen to our lakes, rivers and oceans, resulting in unwanted algae blooms.
