Showcasing our Best Science Art:
Top 7 SayoStudio Projects of 2024
Scientific visualization bridges the gap between research and understanding, turning complex ideas into clear narratives. This year, we celebrate the work our team at SayoStudio has accomplished alongside scientists, engineers, and innovators. Here, we’re highlighting our Top 7 science visuals of 2024—a testament to the ways art and science intersect to educate, communicate, and engage diverse audiences!
1. Google Quantum AI: Visualizing Quantum System Cooling
We collaborated with Google Quantum AI to animate and illustrate their publication in Science. The feature art depicted “valve” qubits cooling the quantum system, a step in advancing quantum computing. This project captured the precision of quantum mechanics in a visually clear way, bringing abstract concepts into focus.
2. Nature Biotechnology Cover: GEARS Deep Learning Model
Our illustration for Dr. Roohani’s Nature Biotechnology publication showcased GEARS, a geometric deep learning model capable of predicting biologically meaningful post-perturbation phenotypes. The cover art captured the complexity of this research, emphasizing its potential to transform the field of biotechnology.
3. Science Figures: Exploring the Ecological Role of Sharks
In collaboration with Dedman et al., we developed a series of science figures for their publication in Science. These visuals explored the ecological role of sharks and their contributions to marine ecosystems. The project emphasized clarity and detail, ensuring the figures effectively supported the research.
4. Nature Cover Art: Eurasian Migrations and Genetic Traits
For William Barrie’s research on ancient Eurasian migrations, we created a Nature journal cover. This work visualized how these migrations shaped genetic traits, including Europe’s elevated multiple sclerosis risk. Additionally, the art was used in press releases, extending it’s research. Read our full blog on the archaeology illustration project.
5. Cell Cover: Tripwire Analogy for HIV Protein Research
Our studio crafted cover art for Cell to illustrate HIV protein research using a tripwire analogy. Inspired by an AI-generated style reference provided by the researcher, we showcased the value of human refinement in visual storytelling. The final piece balanced creativity and accuracy, bringing abstract scientific concepts to life.
6. Ropeless Fishing Systems: Animation and Illustration
Partnering with UMass Boston and the Consortium for Wildlife Bycatch Reduction, we illustrated and animated two ropeless fishing systems. These systems are designed to protect marine life, such as the North Atlantic Right Whale. We highlighted how these ropeless technologies operate and how they can contribute to environmental preservation.
7. Nature Cover: Human Cell Atlas 3D Mapping
A Year of Innovation and Collaboration
From quantum computing to genomic mapping, 2024 has been a year of collaborations and transformative science. Each project reflects our team’s dedication to creating visuals that communicate science and engineering effectively, amplify research, and educate a wide range of scientific audiences. We’d like to thank all of our collaborators we had the opportunity to work with this year and we look forward to visualizing science in 2025! Wishing you all a happy new year!
